Guided tours during the 2007 Amador County Fair are once an hour on the half-hour. Tour departs from the Master Gardeners exhibit near the closed bridge (between Pokerville Hall (6) and the Floriculture Building (5) by the Pond Gardens (22) and Rotary Club Wine Garden (19)) to the Butterfly Garden just outside the Main Gate (get your hand stamped!) Thursday, July 26th (Kid Day) and Friday, July 27th, 2007. A partial plant list and map will be available for a dollar donation per person (though more is always appreciated.) Readers are encouraged to send checks written out to "Plymouth Elementary School Gardens" at P.O. Box 847, Plymouth, CA 95669. Contact Bruce Peccianti - Principal - (209) 245-6912 for "needed" garden materials, too. |

"Bumper Cars, Rodeo Stars, and Ewe!"
The flagpole and bell of Plymouth Elementary School share the road with the Amador County Fairgrounds Main Entrance. Effort from faculty, staff, and community is resulting in an ever expanding series of gardens. This ground was formerly a garden in the 1800 - and now this campus is a hub of local agricultural education. The heart of the project is a butterfly garden centered around the P.E.P. Club Shade Pavilion. There, kids eat lunch, and recreational activities are sheltered from the elements. Classes are offered on Tuesdays by representatives from the Farm Bureau Agriculture in the Classroom, the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Master Gardeners, the Amador County Waste Management Department, and others. The unique thing about this project - it not normally open to the general public - it belongs to the kids. |

The intent of the gardens is NOT to have "perfect" display. 40% of crop damage is due to butterflies and moths, so some plants will look ragged. The kids are being taught how to raise "pests" in one garden, while raising a food garden on one side and a bird garden nearby. Even the pavilion is home to birds. Kids choose where plants go, and some plants will have to be transplanted! The garden is for many lessons - like composting, pruning, deadheading, native and introduced plants, multilingual education, pest and weed i.d., etc., and to slow the hectic world down in general. The intent of these pages is for public viewing, for grants, gathering support, and for worker notes, and is updated at www.michaelspinetta.com
UCCE Master Gardeners of Amador County mgamador@ucdavis.edu or ceamador.ucdavis.edu any time. A list of sightings in Amador County came from butterfliesandmoths.org. California School Garden Network donated textbooks. *** Good sandwiches and refreshments can be found at the Rotary Club booths near the grandstands and behind Pokerville Hall (at the waterfall) during the fair. *** Plymouth-Foothills Rotary Club will collect tour money and match it dollar for dollar. A tour will be recorded for Podcast by the Hometown Radio show Morning Madness! Click to listen to Episode 619 - 11 minutes.
